New Orleans Concrete Leveling
Decision Guide

Concrete leveling vs replacement: how do you choose?

When lifting the slab you have is the smart move, when it's throwing good money after bad, and how the costs really compare.

By New Orleans Concrete Leveling · Updated

Choose concrete leveling when the slab is sound and only its support has failed; choose replacement when the concrete itself is broken, crumbling or heaved. Mudjacking typically costs 30–50% less than replacement ($4–$9 vs $6–$15 per sq ft, per HomeGuide). Foam ($8–$25) can cost as much as a new pour on large slabs.

New Orleans Concrete Leveling connects people with leveling contractors, and still says plainly when replacement is the better call. Cost figures are from HomeGuide (updated November 2025).

The one question that decides it

Is the concrete itself sound? Leveling fixes a slab that has lost its support — the soil under it compressed or washed out — but is otherwise intact. It can’t fix concrete that’s broken apart, crumbling at the surface, or pushed up from below.

Cost and downtime compared

Mudjacking Foam leveling Replacement
Cost per sq ft $4–$9 $8–$25 $6–$15
Full 450 sq ft driveway $1,800–$4,100 ~$3,600–$11,250 ~$2,700–$6,750
Time on site A few hours A few hours Days
Back in use 2–3 days to drive Same day About a week or more
Demolition and haul-off None None Yes

Mudjacking is the clear cost winner. Foam’s case isn’t price — it’s same-day use, light weight on soft soil and small holes.

Five signs replacement is the right call

  1. The slab is shattered into many small pieces, with nothing large enough to lift as a unit.
  2. The surface is crumbling or badly spalled. Lifting it level won’t fix the surface.
  3. A root pushed it up. Leveling only raises concrete; heave needs grinding or removal.
  4. It was poured too thin or with no base and is failing everywhere at once.
  5. You want a different size, shape or finish anyway.

Borderline cases — a cracked panel, a slab lifted once before — are covered in can you level a cracked slab?

The New Orleans wrinkle

Replacement doesn’t stop the ground from moving. The City of New Orleans puts average subsidence at about 0.2 inches a year, faster in places. A new slab on a poorly prepared base can settle just like the old one. If you replace, insist on a compacted base and good drainage. If you level, fix the downspouts and seal the joints. Either way, the water is the part you control.

Bottom line

Level a sound slab that has sunk; replace one that’s broken, crumbling or heaved. Mudjacking usually saves 30–50% over replacement; foam trades price for speed and light weight. Call (504) 517-8336 for an estimate that tells you which — free estimate within 24 hours.

Quick answers

How much cheaper is leveling than replacing concrete?

HomeGuide puts mudjacking at 30–50% less than tear-out and replacement. Foam leveling isn't always cheaper — at $8–$25 per square foot it can match or exceed replacement's $6–$15 on a large slab.

How long does replacement take compared with leveling?

Leveling usually takes a few hours on site. Replacement means demolition, haul-off, forming, pouring and cure time before the slab can take a car — typically days to over a week.

Will a new slab in New Orleans sink too?

It can, if the soil under it keeps settling and the base isn't well prepared. Replacement gives you a chance to rebuild the base; leveling keeps the slab and fixes support under it.
